He raised his wrinkled hands, directing his gaze to the object he held – a framed picture. The chimp sighed heavily, lowering his eyes. How many humans were coming? What weapons were they armed with?

A torrent of thoughts wracked Caesar’s mind – how he wished he hadn’t had to kill the bonobo, how he never wanted war to come to his family, and wondering just how he was going to do this. Just four days ago, Koba had begun the inevitable war between his tribe and the remaining humans.
The chimpanzee was staring off into the distant land, jade green eyes resting on the silhouette of the human city.
Sitting on the topmost branch, strong toes curled around the softened wood, was Caesar. High above the bivouac towered a huge tree – the home of the royal family. One of the orangutans held a large slab of stone – a list of names that seemed to be growing by the day as they discovered who all was lost on that terrible night. Their soft hoots and grunts were heard as they spoke, recounting the horrors that had happened only four days ago. Barely any of the remaining apes in the encampment were awake, a few members of the tribe gathered around a small flickering fire.
It was still a bit dark, the morning still quite early. Droplets fell from the leaves high above the forest floor, a thick smell wafting into the camp. Rain pattered softly through the forest, sky a dark grey and a thin mist weaving its way through the moss-covered trees.
